Savannah Cat Breed Information | Creature Companion

The Savannah cat breed is a hybrid between a domestic cat and the African serval, a medium-sized, large-eared wild cat. Savannahs are considered a rare and exotic cat breed. They are tall and long with striking spotted or marbled patterns, much like their wild ancestor. Savannahs are very active and social cats.

They love to play and are often described as "dog-like" in their behaviour. They are very curious and can be quite mischievous. Savannahs can be very vocal; some may even learn to "talk" using a combination of meows, chirps, and clicks. They are also knowledgeable and can be trained to do tricks, walk on a leash, and even use the toilet.

Savannah cats are not for everyone. They require a lot of time, patience, and attention. They also need plenty of space to roam and play. If you are considering a Savannah cat, be sure to do your research and find a reputable breeder.


Three primary factors affect the character of the Savannah cat behaviour: Lineage, Generation and Socialization. If a bred line tends to a specific behaviour over another behaviour, it is likely to be passed to the breed lines of the offspring.


Laws governing ownership of Savannah cats are different in different countries; for example- some states in the United States have restrictive laws on hybrid cat ownership, including Hawaii, Massachusetts, Texas and Georgia, but Savannahs are more than five generations from the serval.


Hence they are allowed to be owned in New York states but not in the city of New York. The Australian Federal government has banned the importation of the Savannah cat in Australia, as the more giant cats could potentially threaten species of the country's native wildlife, usually not threatened by smaller domestic cats.


Savannah cats are legal in every province of Canada. However, some regions have restrictions on the ownership of F1 and F2 generations and importing from the United States requires rabies vaccination and special permits.


In India, the law is that no animal shall be domesticated whose natural home is a forest within the geographical boundary of India; in other words, Savannah can be domesticated here.


The Savannah is a relatively new breed that The International Cat Association recognized in 2012, and Since 2006 it has held the Guinness Book World Record for the World's Tallest Domestic Cat. 


Savannah cat is known for its loyalty and will follow its owners around the house. It can be trained to fetch and walk with a leash. It is reportedly a very social and friendly creature with new people and other dogs and cats.
